Molly: Tell us a little about yourself…

Nicole: I am a single mom of 2 boys that are 26 and 17, and Nana to a beautiful 7 year old Girl.

I have always been bigger than most of my friends and because my older sister was super tiny, I always felt fat.  She was petite and I was Husky.

I started dieting when I was 9 years old.  I’ve tried so many diets along the way.

But that’s just it…when dieting you do great and lose weight but when the diet is over you just go back to how you were eating and gain it back and then some.

Weighing in at the doctors at my heaviest I was 307 lbs. and at the moment decided to have weight loss surgery.

So after 6 months of classes where they taught me about the different surgery procedures and what to expect I chose to have Gastric Sleeve surgery.

However, I only lost 78 lbs. and got stuck for almost a year.

Since then, I have worked with an online accountability group and have lost an additional 35 lbs. learning healthier choices, portion control and exercise.

I have since become a Fitness Motivator, offering a monthly accountability group, healthy recipes, daily feedback and support.

Molly: What is your favorite thing to do for fun?

Nicole: For fun I love to go to the Beach, I love people watching so Venice Beach is always one of my go to places.

I love to hang out with friends, BBQ and relax by the pool and I like to crochet.

Baseball games with the kids and love family game night at home.  We love to play Uno Attack and Cards Against Humanity.

Molly: What is your favorite part about being a mom?

Nicole: Knowing that my children are a part of me, they were grown and nurtured within me.

Watching them learn and achieve new things. To see them love the same things I did and sometimes not like what I liked.

Watching them grow into their own person and the challenges we face and concur together.

Molly: What caused you to start your fitness journey?

Nicole: What caused me to start my fitness journey was, I was recently divorced and tired of being heavy and the only person that was now holding me back was me.

When asked to play Barbie’s on the floor with my granddaughter, I was barely able to move around and had a hard time getting off the ground was the last straw.

I realized then that this was not how I wanted to live and I wanted to LIVE to watch her grow up.

Molly: What was the hardest thing you had to overcome before starting?

Nicole: Honestly once I set my mind to start losing weight, I was so determined that giving up all my favorite foods was easy.

I was even able to make my son my favorite foods and not want to eat them.

However, exercise has been a struggle. Why? Because I hate feeling hot and sweaty, but am learning to overcome that and know that once I get my workout done I feel so good.  It really is an emotional rush.

Molly: Your Instagram says “It’s not a diet it’s a lifestyle change.” What did your average day look like before and after?

Nicole: An average day before would be a very large breakfast, 2 fried eggs and large helping of fried potatoes, refried beans and 4-6 slices of bacon.

I always had snacks at my desk so I would munch throughout the day.  Candy, pretzels, chips, nuts. Lunch was probably my only healthy meal, but I still overate.

For Dinner it would be steak, potatoes, and a veggie. Large portions.

Being overweight most of my life but especially the last 20 years, I didn’t know what it felt like to be full, so I just ate and ate and then I would feel sick, I did not want to do anything so, I would just lay around.

Now I have a good healthy breakfast, most days I have a healthy shake for breakfast that is full of fruits, veggies, pro-biotics, pre-biotics and many other healthy nutrients, or I have a 3 egg white and spinach omelet or 1 cup of plain 0% Fage Greek yogurt with mixed fruit.

I try not to snack between meals but if I do I will have some carrots or some almonds and string cheese.

For lunch I have an ounce of protein, 1 cup of steamed veggies, and ¾ cup steamed brown rice or half a baked potato with salsa.

For dinner if I go out with friends I usually share a meal with someone or I immediately request a box and put half of the meal away.

At home I’ll have BBQ’d chicken or steak, and veggies or I’ll have a spinach salad.

I try to workout 4-5 days per week via dvd, the gym, or just power walking/jogging.

Molly: What is your favorite healthy meal?

Nicole: My favorite healthy meal is probably a good spinach salad with, diced chicken or ground turkey, bell pepper, onion, tomato and avocado with balsamic dressing.

Molly: What is your favorite food to splurge on?

Nicole: My absolute favorite food to splurge on is chips, salsa and guacamole.  I also love Tri-Tip and never turn down a good BBQ.

Molly: What is your favorite motivational quote?

Nicole: This one speaks a lot to me “Losing Weight is Hard. Being Overweight is Hard. CHOOSE Your Hard!”

However, I have to say I keep this one on my refrigerator, “When You Feel Like Quitting, Think About Why You Started“.

Molly: How have your friends and family best supported you on your journey?

Nicole: When I started my journey I told maybe a handful of people.  This was something I was doing for myself and didn’t want the fact that I had surgery held against me.

Believe me, some people that is the first thing they say. “You took the easy way out” Or “That’s the only way you could do it”. Yes, I have had both of those said to me.

I didn’t take the easy way out, I did what was best for me and that is all that matters.

Even with knowing what I know today, I still would have made the same decision.

Molly: What advice do you have for someone who wants to start losing weight?

Nicole: Figure out what your triggers are.  Remove ALL temptation from your home.

Believe in Yourself… You are the only one that matters and the only one that can make these changes in your lifestyle.

Molly: How can friends and family best support someone on their journey, and what is not helpful?

Nicole: ALWAYS BE POSITIVE. Being Negative is the worst thing you can do to a person.

ALWAYS BE POSITIVE. Being Negative is the worst thing you can do to a person.

There is a reason we are heavy (I hate using the word FAT).

My weight started with pregnancy and an unsupportive spouse who belittled me and put me down and made me feel bad about myself.

Molly: How has living fit helped you feel great?

Nicole: Before I started my journey I had very high Blood Pressure, Cholesterol and my Asthma was bad.  I could barely walk fifteen or so steps without being out of breath.

Since I have lost most of my weight (I still have 50 lbs. to go), I no longer take blood pressure or cholesterol meds, I very rarely need to use my inhaler and not only can I walk without being out of breath but I now jog.

I have more energy and just feel good.

Molly: Any other advice or stories?

Nicole: Just watch your mindless eating. Drink water.  Ask yourself, are you really hungry?

Just watch your mindless eating. Drink water.  Ask yourself, are you really hungry?

Most of the time all your body really wants is water. You should be drinking half your weight in ounces per day.

I try to drink 80-100 oz of water a day.

I am still in the learning process and still have set backs, but I remind myself that it is only a setback and pick myself back up and get to eating right.
