Want to do something awesome with your elementary age kids, but not sure what to do?

 

According to the CDC, “The percentage of children aged 6–11 years in the United States who were obese increased from 7% in 1980 to nearly 18% in 2012.” There has never been a better time become a fit family.

Here are 5 activities you share with your children that will show your kids a great time, increase your bond, and demonstrate that your family prioritizes health.


Fit Family Activity #1: JUMP ROPE

Jumping rope is an amazing workout, with or without kids. While you may enjoy the intensity and efficiency of jump roping, your kids will love all of the fun tricks!

Make sure to get a jump rope that fits you, so that you will not spend extra time frustrated.


Fit Family Activity #2: TAG

Tag is a wonderful game to play (particularly with multiple children) because it can be played anywhere there is an open space with no prep work. If you want to really have fun with it, try these three variations!


Fit Family Activity #3: OBSTACLE COURSE

This option involves more preparation, but is definitely worth it. You can use supplies you have around the house, or can raid Dollar Tree for pool noodles and other fun things. This dad had a blast making an obstacle course for his family!

Another option, particularly for all of the soccer moms out there, is to have a soccer dribbling obstacle course. Challenge your kids to dribble the ball around cones, lawn chairs or anything else you can find.

You can double the fun by timing the course and making it a family competition!


Fit Family Activity #4: FOLLOW THE LEADER

An easy, no prep game you can play with your kids is Follow the Leader. A wonderful thing about this game is that you can play almost anywhere. If you need some action ideas, here are 5 fun ones!

  • Skipping
  • Hopping
  • Walking Backwards
  • Crab Walk
  • Airplane (running with your arms out like airplane wings)

Fit Family Activity #5: DANCE PARTY

One very fun and memorable activity to do with your kids is to have a dance party. Do you have 2 left feet? No problem!

There are multiple songs that just tell you what to do. These are some popular choices:

  • Cha-Cha Slide – If your kids are Mario, Sonic or Pokemon fans, they will really enjoy this video.
  • Hoedown Throwdown – This video breaks down each step of this quirky dance.
  • Twist and Shout – Sometimes, it is time for a classic.
  • YMCA – “It’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A!”
  • Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) – This song was released around Christmas in 2014 and has soared with popularity since!

Whatever you decide to do with your family, have fun with it and remember to never take yourself too seriously. These moments will be memories your kids will love and cherish forever!

    These are great ideas for those days you don’t have anything planned…and they wont even know it’s a workout! (Reminder for all of us…if its fun it doesn’t feel like work.) We love dance parties in this house 🙂
